Agreed to the day before, at 11 AM, on the 11th day of the 11th month, a cease fire was commenced beginning the end of the Great War. The official end of the war was not until the following June with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles.
1918年11月,士兵们庆祝第一次世界大战停战。
Why
significant
After four years of brutal fighting, almost all participants of the western front: the British, French and Germans were almost completely spent, giving no end to the stalemate of the trench warfare that had been going on. Only the recently arrived Americans were growing in strength, and the Germans realized that the fresh Americans, with more supplies and fresh troops on the way would turn the tide against them. They opted to sign an armistice, hoping to trade conquered territory for favorable terms. The Versailles Treaty, however, treated them punitively, the severity of which is largely seen as a contributing cause of World War II two decades later.
