Is China’s gaokao the world’s toughest school exam?

How not to educate children. What a terrible environment to be in. We have a significant number of Chinese students at my University. They are extremely intelligent but can't think outside of the box.

An outdated stereotype of Chinese students.

Those students at your university are the ones who can't hack it at the gaokao. That's why they are spending time with you.

The same can be said about most students from most countries. I don't find Chinese students particularly bad at thinking out of the box.

I remember watching Beautiful Young Minds where one English boy who was brilliant at maths and had also studied in China, said one of the reasons why he loved being in China so much was because being good at maths there meant peer respect - it was cool. Whereas in England you were more likely to be seen as a geek and bullied.

It also crushes skulls

Except the average diamond is not all that precious. It's mostly marketing and supply monopoly. Ever tried to sell one on the secondary market?

I don't like the system for all its excesses. But I recognize the formidable intellectual machines and the strong ethic it brings. When creativity fully flourishes, I am not sure at all if the Western world will be able to keep up.
